The United Irishman joins British Newspaper Archive

The United Irishman has joined the online British Newspaper Archive.

This weekly Irish nationalist title was founded by the revolutionary John Mitchel in February 1848. It deliberately targeted Ireland's 'men of no property', stirring up discontent and encouraging insurrection, and quickly developed a considerable following. Despite its high circulation figures and influence on the masses, it was to have a short life, being published for only 16 editions – all of them now online.

In May 1848, Mitchel was arrested for Treason and sentenced to 14 years transportation to Van Diemen's Land. He escaped after five years and, spent the next two decades in the USA, before returning to Ireland in 1875 where he died.

By joining the British Newspaper Archive database, this title has automatically been added to the Irish newspaper collection of sister company FindMyPast.
