Directory of Local History resources published by DLR Libraries

Attention all researchers with ancestral connections to the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown region. DLR Libraries have launched a new Directory of Local Studies Articles and Book Chapters in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown.

It may not have the snappiest title, but the new directory lists articles, chapters of books, and websites published on topics, people and historical events relating to the district. It has been compiled by Nigel Curtin, former Local Studies Librarian at the main branch library and cultural centre, dlr LexIcon, in the coastal town of Dún Laoghaire.

It is based primarily on material available in DLR Libraries' Local Studies Collection. It does not represent an exhaustive listing but should be considered as a snapshot of material identified by the Local Studies Librarian from 2014-2021.

Its purpose is to assist the researcher in identifying topics of interest from the wide-ranging resources in the Collection. And there are certainly plenty of them; at a very loose count, the list includes brief details of 1,100 articles published in journals, 160-odd chapters published in books, some 250 website resources, and more than 30 miscellaneous manuscripts, films, reports, and archival material.

Nigel Curtin has also recently produced a leaflet called Starter for Ten: Top Ten Local History Books which provides suggestions for a general introduction to the history of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown. Several include links to the online version of the book.

* Historically, the area was in County Dublin but in 1994 it became a county in its own right.
