Historical postcards of towns join Tipperary Studies' digital archive

Tipperary Studies, the specialist local history department of Tipperary Libraries, has some more goodies for us today. The team has uploaded a collection of just under 100 historical postcards to its digital archive, where they are free to view.

The Square, Cahir, Co Tipperary

I've just been looking through the folder of Caher postcards, where my grandad was born in 1903 and descendants of his brothers still live. Most of the photographs were taken in the first three decades of the 20th century, so they show the town just how he would have known it. However, it is striking to see just how little the town has changed, give or take some clothes styles of the locals and a good few more vehicles fighting for space on the roads.

The Postcard collection is divided into five bundles arranged by location, as follows:

  • Cashel - Clonmel
  • Nenagh -Tipperary
  • Aherlow - Borrisoleigh
  • Cahir
  • Carrick-on-Suir
