The British Newspaper Archive has added The Irish News and Belfast Morning News to its online database. It automatically joins the FindMyPast Irish newspaper collection also.

So far, editions from 1897 and 1900 have been added, but the holding will eventually span 1892 to 1911. The paper, which continues to be published in Belfast, is the only independently owned daily newspaper based in Northern Ireland.

The National Archives of Ireland yesterday published its Archive of the Month (here) containing three documents compiled by police in 1917 on orders from Dublin Castle in which national and local newspapers were described by political affiliation, circulation and spheres of influence. The description for The Irish News reads as follows:

"A Nationalist newspaper voicing the opinions of and supporting the Irish Parliamentary Party. It has a fairly wide circulation amongst the Roman Catholic and Nationalist members of the community in Belfast and Ulster generally.

"It does not publish speeches and other matter in furtherance of the Sinn Fein movement. It does not publish boycotting or intimidatory notices, nor letters referring to agrarian matters."
