Volunteers wanted for heritage project in N Ireland

The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) is seeking volunteers to help record and further update the Defence Heritage Record. The latter concerns sites of Military/Defence heritage interest and includes structures from the First and Second World Wars, as well as the Cold War. Some features from the early 20th century have yet to be surveyed.

The NIEA call for volunteers says: 'These sites have direct, and often poignant, connections to past generations, whose lives were shaped and affected by the conflicts that engulfed Europe.

'NIEA not only want to record what survives today, but also want to hear as much as possible of what local people know had been built but is long since destroyed.'

To find out more, to volunteer, or to inform NIEA of defence heritage structures, forward your details by email to hmenquiries@doeni.gov.uk or telephone 028 9054 3159. Alternatively send details by post NIEA Historic Environment Division, Waterman House, 5-33 Hill Street, Belfast BT1 2LA.
